In our culture money is highly valued and often fall is budget time for churches and other organizations. In some cases rhetoric replaces reality in budget discussions. The advice to” follow the money” is helpful when examining budgets to see if churches and other organizations’ spending plan actually matches with their stated values.

At the Baptist Convention of Iowa (BCI), I am recommending that we align our budget in the following ways to better match our stated values of supporting churches, starting churches, and missions outside of our own context.

Recommendations:

1. Because we value supporting our churches, we recommend that we go from zero to three BCI staff members who have the primary responsibility to support and encourage our churches.
2. Because we value supporting church planters, we recommend that we increase the funding for church planting by twenty-five percent and decrease the BCI staff portion of our church planting budget from thirty-six percent to thirteen percent.
3. Because we value generosity and missions, we recommend that we increase our missions giving as a state convention from twenty percent of receipts to fifty percent of receipts.
