Since quitting my job as a grade school teacher last May, I have had the pleasure of occasionally accompanying my husband as he travels around the state to visit with pastors. It has been such a joy to meet our pastors and wives and to hear how God is working in their ministries. Last week I attended the annual luncheon for retired pastors and their wives. Everyone converged at the Ankeny Bonanza Steakhouse at noon on February 19th. Tables were arranged and rearranged so that we could all sit and see one another, and after eating a generous buffet lunch, the sharing got started.

Claude McFerrin acted as host and moderator of the group of eleven couples. Those in attendance were Herb and Alice Barrett, Max and Devra Carmichael, Jack and Cathy Comer, Charles and Shirley Dill, Richard and Bette Lamborn, Tim and Darlene Lubinus, Lewis and Janelle Markwood, Claude and Irene McFerrin, Jerry and Debbie McFerrin, Tom and Marie Nesbitt, and Dale and Susie Short.

After a round of brief introductions we sang All Hail the Power of Jesus Name and randomly shared humorous stories and other interesting tidbits. Then Pastor McFerrin encouraged each couple to explain what God has been doing in their lives since they were together last year. We laid hands on several couples and prayed for them as they shared a trying circumstance or expressed an immediate need.

It was so encouraging for me to hear how each of these dear couples is still active in their communities, either pastoring churches or encouraging local bodies with their participation. It is clear that retirement doesn’t mean your usefulness is put on a shelf. God continues to work mightily through these men and women!

After singing Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine we ended with prayer, and the group continued to chat and fellowship together. Each of us will look forward to next February when we will undoubtedly meet again thanks to Claude’s administrative abilities!
