New book, ‘We Cannot Be Silent,’ releasing October 27

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, outlines the progression of the moral revolution that has taken place in our nation over the last 20 years while explaining the dangerous effects of this significant shift in his new book, “We Cannot Be Silent,” releasing October 27, 2015 (Thomas Nelson, 9780718032487, $24.99).

Through his daily podcast “The Briefing,” as well as interviews with outlets such as CNN, Politico and The New York Times, Mohler has been a vocal proponent of speaking biblical truth with love in a culture in which it is often unpopular and misconstrued. In “We Cannot Be Silent,” he reveals the deep value of the Christian moral tradition and the importance of speaking truth in a society “redefining sex, marriage and the very meaning of right and wrong.”
“It is important to trace the revolution and understand that the most heated controversies of our day did not emerge from a vacuum onto the daily headlines,” writes Mohler. “We dare not underestimate the scale, scope, and significance of this moral revolution. Even more urgently, we cannot underestimate the gospel of Jesus Christ. This book is written in the hope that the church will be found faithful, even in the midst of the storm.”
In “We Cannot Be Silent,” Mohler points to four key developments that have attributed to the moral revolution: the acceptance of the divorce culture, liberation of sex from reproduction, the prevalence of heterosexual cohabitation, and the rise of the homosexual and transgender movements. Further, he shows the impact these have had on the global church and the danger of what could happen if Christians remains silent.

“The church cannot abdicate its responsibility for Christian truth-telling in a postmodern age,” Mohler writes. “The choice before the church is clear: we will either ground this generation in the grandeur and glory of all that biblical Christianity represents, or we will see the roster of the ‘missing in action’ grow to even more tragic proportions. Seen in this light, the challenge of the sexual revolution serves as a catalyst to call the church to wake up from a moral slumber into a life of bold and authentic Christian witness and faithful living.”
Giving readers a clear understanding of the religious liberties that are at stake, Mohler provides practical examples of how to face the challenge of believing, living and engaging the culture faithfully. He dedicates the final chapter to answering 30 tough questions often asked regarding the sexual revolution, including:
  • Since Jesus did not specifically address homosexuality, how can we be certain he considers it sinful behavior?
  • Are people born gay? Doesn’t that mean God made them gay?
  • More and more evangelicals are embracing same-sex unions. Isn’t this an issue where we can agree to disagree? If not, why?
  • Should a Christian attend a same-sex wedding ceremony?
  • Should Christian parents allow their children to play at the homes of children who have parents in a same-sex union?
  • Aren’t laws that give Christians the right to refuse goods and services to a same-sex couple for their wedding similar to Jim Crow laws?
  • Why should Christians care if same-sex couples marry? If they are unbelievers, why should Christians dictate their actions? Shouldn’t we just worry about preaching the gospel?
