Engaging Hearts: Iowa’s Call to Disaster Relief
See BCI’s Reinvigorated Disaster Relief Initiative in action
Disaster relief is at the heart of Southern Baptist life across the country as a leading compassion ministry. We are working towards reinvigorating a passion for helping those in need in Iowa, across the nation, and worldwide, aiming to bring help, hope, and healing to people in crisis.
Tornado Response in Minden, Iowa
Recently, the town of Minden in Southwest Iowa suffered a tornado disaster that devastated the town and the surrounding farming community. In partnership with Missouri Disaster Relief, Iowa Disaster Relief assisted by donating tarps to cover damaged houses, containers for victims’ belongings, and food for volunteers who were helping clean up the tornado debris. A big thanks to Missouri Disaster Relief, led by Gaylon Moss.
Renewed Vision for Iowa Disaster Relief
Are you a member of a BCI church in Iowa? Do you have a heart for compassion ministry here and for our neighbors? What is your church’s role in disaster relief?
We have a renewed vision for every BCI church to have some role in engaging with disaster relief. This is an easy and impactful way that your local church can be actively engaged in gospel outreach through community involvement. There are multiple ways of being involved through praying, giving, and volunteering to serve during disaster response. Take a moment to reach out to our Iowa DR State Director, Gared Shaffer (garedshaffer@gmail.com), about what your next step will be.
More Volunteer Trainings in 2024
We are actively recruiting new and experienced volunteers to take our disaster relief efforts to a new level this year. The first step to volunteering to serve is to complete an Iowa DR training. We have already had two Iowa Disaster Relief trainings this year and we are planning more.
