Insights & highlights from the 2023 preaching workshop
Hey there BCI Pastors and Church Leaders, in case you weren’t able to make it to the event, here’s a quick recap of 2023 BCI Preaching Workshop! With a turnout of 38 eager preachers and pastors, this year’s workshop showcased the unique approaches of two of our Iowa pastors and the insights and strategies they employ in the preaching of God’s Word.
Embodied Passion
Pastor Cole Deike, the young pastor and church planter behind Frontier Church in Des Moines, started by sharing the intentional process behind his approach which is focused on experiencing the gospel that you are preaching. One of his main encouragements was to fully experience what you preach about. Don’t just talk about the gospel…live it! Don’t be like a TV chef and just talk about the food. Savor every bite.
Pastor Cole introduced four different sermon types he uses, from structured “Chunk” sermons to cinematic “Freeze Frame” style. He emphasized emotional connection, transparency, and delivering different journeys to keep members engaged.
Precision & Clarity
Next up, Lead Pastor Rob Willey of Coram Deo Bible Church in Davenport, shared his meticulous process and principles behind his sermon prep method which emphasizes precision and clarity.
To Pastor Rob, The Word of God is central. So you should make every word count. He unveiled a detailed approach to crafting sermons, including manuscript usage to maintain precision, and strategies to incorporate effective application throughout the message.
Authenticity & Consistency
Both pastors underscored the importance of authenticity and consistency, while offering practical sermon prep schedules and suggestions for both experienced and new preachers alike.
The 2023 BCI Preaching Workshop was incredible. Thanks to Pastors Cole and Rob for opening new doors of preaching skills and for all the other preachers in attendance for leaning in to the transformative power of faithful and passionate biblical preaching in our local churches!
