Friendship Baptist Church (FBC) in Ames will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Baptist Convention of Iowa played an
essential role in our church history, so we would like to invite you to join us for the celebration. Rev. Michael Thurman, the church’s
first pastor and a former pastor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dexter Avenue church, will join us. The anniversary celebration will
be at 11:45 am at FBC.
FBC began as a mission church under the Baptist Convention of Iowa in 1988. Thurman was Friendship’s pastor until 1992. Thurman currently serves as an Adjunct Instructor at Alabama State University where he teaches “Introduction to Applied Ethics” and “Logical Reasoning,” and at Troy University where he teaches “Introduction to Ethics.” He has pastored churches in Alabama, Louisiana, and Iowa, including the Dexter Avenue Church in Montgomery, former church of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Under Thurman’s leadership, the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Foundation was developed for the church’s historical preservation and to provide public education for the thousands of tourists who visit Dexter Avenue each year.
Prior to returning to Montgomery, Thurman was employed as an Associate Director of The African American Church Extension Division of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention where he coordinated and directed church planting efforts in sixteen states.
