My new hero in dealing with confrontation is Mitch Green. Recently I wrote an article that Mitch Green of Country Roads Baptist Church in Lenox read. He immediately responded directly with me and let me know that he strongly disagreed with what I wrote. I gave him a call. As a result of the phone call, I found some of the disagreement wasn’t because we disagreed with one another, but because my article wasn’t as clear as what I thought it was. I immediately modified my article to clarify my position.
Then Mitch offered for my wife, Darlene, and I to come to his place and meet for dinner with him and Lorri to discuss the whole thing. I was so encouraged by this! This indicated that Mitch’s desire was to focus on relationship and understanding and to get to the bottom of the disagreement rather than trying to show he was right and win an argument.
When we met in their home we had a great time together. Much of our time was getting to know one another as couples, eating great food, and in a low stress, high trust environment, taking the time to fully discuss any issues of disagreement that came from my article.
In the end we still didn’t fully agree with one another on every issue, but I was sharpened by Mitch and understand more clearly how and why he came to his positions. What a treat!. Thanks Mitch and Lorri!
