As we move from Thanksgiving into Advent, two recent stories from BCI churches highlight the transforming power of simple, Christlike love poured out in local communities.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” — John 13:35 (CSB)

Thanksgiving at Generations Church – Waterloo/Cedar Falls

Generations Church hosted its first community-wide Thanksgiving meal. It was an open invitation for anyone in Waterloo/Cedar Falls to enjoy a full, hot, family-style dinner at no cost. Supported by generous local sponsors and a small army of volunteers, the church served hundreds with hospitality, dignity, and joy. The event was about more than food, it was a place where people felt seen, welcomed, and loved in Jesus’ name. As one church member shared, “They will know us by our love.”

Parade Outreach at Calvary Baptist Church – Marshalltown

Calvary Baptist Church in Marshalltown spent several months preparing an outreach for their community’s annual Oktemberfest Parade. Members assembled 800 Grab Bags, each containing church information, a pen and notepad, and, most importantly, a full Bible with a Romans Road bookmark. Every bag placed Scripture directly into someone’s hands. Highlighting the value of cooperation as Pastor Michael and Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Ames provided the Bibles, the outreach became a joyful display of partnership and gospel hope.

These stories remind us that God is at work in BCI churches through ordinary acts of generosity. As churches enter the Advent season, may these examples inspire us to love boldly, serve joyfully, and point our communities to Christ.
