Inspired by an article on making pillow cases with scripture verses to show God’s love and care to those hurting from cancer, abuse, etc., the Women on Mission (WOM) group of First Baptist Church, Bettendorf, Iowa, made plans to include a project work day as part of their March monthly meeting. Each lady was asked to bring a new pillow and the one yard of material needed to make a pillow case.
At the conclusion of the regular monthly meeting, the fellowship hall was turned into a sewing/craft room with three sewing machines ready to sew. Thirteen ladies began measuring, cutting and sewing pillowcases together. As some in the group concentrated on sewing the cases, other ladies were ready to write scripture verses on the pillow cases.
Those who receive the new pillow and case will be able to take it with them and find comfort in the scripture verses knowing someone cares and is praying for them.
The next step was to find a place that would accept the pillows. As contacts were made, the group found a shelter for abused women and children that graciously accepted the pillows. The person at the shelter asked, “How many pillows do you have?” Judy Leahr, the FBC contact person replied, “We have fourteen made, how many could you use?” The reply was, “We have fourteen women and children right now.” What an awesome God we serve!
The WOM group also has a prayer quilt ministry. They have project work days where they gather and make quilts which are given to church members, family and friends of those dealing with illness or hospitalization. Before the quilt is given to someone it is prayed over by the group and/or Sunday School class members.
