BCI Pastors Ro Sang & Cory Gonyo Lead Training in Des Moines
On Tuesday, September 17th, a group of Burmese pastors from across Iowa gathered in Des Moines for their monthly fellowship, led by Pastor Ro Sang from Chin Christian Church. This month’s meeting featured Pastor Cory Gonyo from First Baptist Church in Bettendorf, who serves on the BCI Pastoral Ministry Team. Prior to taking his current role in 2014, Pastor Cory also served as an IMB missionary to Southeast Asia for eight years with his family. The pastors are ethnic Chin who gather monthly for fellowship, theological training, and practical discussions.
Reflecting on the event, Pastor Cory shared, “It was sweetly amazing. We connected very quickly on cultural levels, and we were able to go deep in our training.” The training focused on key topics requested by the pastors, including the role of pastors and deacons, managing pastoral time, and understanding why American Christianity seems to be in decline. Cory addressed these issues with biblical guidance, centering much of the conversation around Acts 6 and the importance of a healthy, Word-centered ministry.
The pastors received copies of the Baptist Faith and Message and additional handouts, which were requested by the group for further study. There is eagerness for robust theological training, and one of the young pastors in attendance is pursuing his doctorate in ministry from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Pastor Cory’s presentation was done in both English and Burmese, with Pastor Ro providing translation to ensure clarity. “Pastor Ro did a great job setting the tone, moderating, and translating for me. He is golden!” Cory remarked.
The gathering also offered a time of sharing meals, with lunch prepared by members of the Chin church. The generosity of the group extended to a love offering that covered travel costs. Pastor Cory noted how much the experience reminded him of his time serving in Southeast Asia, creating a sweet sense of homecoming in the midst of the training.
This fruitful day of fellowship and learning promises further follow-ups and continued partnership among the pastors, as they strive to lead their churches faithfully according to the Word of God.
