On the evening of June 30, widespread rainfall of between 3 and 8 inches fell causing extensive flash flooding county wide. The flooding resulted in widespread property damage and dangerous conditions causing dozens of rescues from vehicles and homes. An additional threat from inflow from the Des Moines River in Saylorville Reservoir crated the potential of longer term river flooding below the reservoir.
Our state disaster relief directors, Shari and Mike Carlson, and the state coordinator from Ohio, Sam Kelly have been coordinating with Polk County Emergency Management officials to reach out and assist people who have been affected by the flooding. They have asked for assistance for workers from the surrounding states in our region to help with the cleanup efforts. People from Ohio, Iowa and Kansas/Nebraska have already begun working in the flood damaged areas. Teams from Missouri, Michigan, Illinois and Kansas/ Nebraska will be coming in this weekend to help. First Family Church in Ankeny is hosting the teams that are coming to stay and help. If you are interested in finding out how you can get involved contact Shari Carlson at iowadr@bciowa.org.
