Heartland Church celebrated their 9th Anniversary and broke ground for their first building project on Sunday, October 20th. Their journey has been deliberate but not hurried. They purchased 31 acres in the city in January 2009. The church has worked on plans for a building project since that time. The church leased a vacant middle school from the Sioux City School District beginning in January 2005. However, in July 2012 the district notified church leaders that the old school would be torn down to make way for a new elementary school. This thrust the building program schedule ahead by over 2 1/2 years. The original lease coincided with their projection to build in 2015. It also forced the church to scurry for short-term lease agreements. As a result, since April 2013, Heartland has worshiped at West High School on Sundays and conducted mid-week children ministries in a building owned and operated by Youth for Christ. In the meantime, Heartland has also moved their office operations onto the new property using a modular building. Heartland plans to open their new 18,000 square foot multi-purpose building in June 2014.
