What is WMU?
Since 1888, WMU (Woman’s Missionary Union), an auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention, has been serving SBC churches and providing ways for those churches to cooperate in accomplishing the Great Commission.
“Everything we do in WMU is for the sake of the gospel. There is a common thread throughout Scripture that reveals God’s heart for all people to know Him. WMU relies on this biblical understanding of missions and uses it to help the church fulfill its mission. We believe the world needs to hear the good news of Jesus Christ, and we have a responsibility to take the gospel to the nations. It is His work, and we join Him. He guides. We follow. We must seek His will with all our hearts and then with courage go forward, dedicated to the God-given task of proclaiming the good news to all the world.”
—Sandy Wisdom-Martin, Executive Director-Treasurer, WMU, SBC
In Iowa, WMU groups in the local church provide missions discipleship for children, pray for and give to missions, and minister in their own communities to share the love of Christ. WMU leaders also work together at the state level to advocate for missions and make disciples of Jesus who live on mission.
Below are some ways Iowa WMU serves BCI Churches:
- Mail out materials that promote the annual Week of Prayer and Offerings for the North American and International missionaries of the SBC.
- Correspond with International Mission Board (IMB) missionaries with Iowa connections.
- Match church missions needs with resources provided by Women’s Missionary Union.
- Encourage women leaders by visiting churches, providing training opportunities, and activities and events associated with National WMU.
- Host an annual WMU Women’s Retreat.
- Hold our Iowa WMU Annual Meeting to coincide with the BCI Annual Meeting.
- This year, in cooperation with IMB personnel, WMU is hosting a Global Missions Lunch during the BCI Annual Meeting at 12:30-2:00pm on Saturday, November 8th, 2025. Mark your calendars and save the date!
