From West Des Moines to East Africa:
Keith Missel’s Journey from Pastor to Trainer
Keith Missel, former Lead Pastor of Westwind Church, has resigned to join Training Leaders International (TLI) in Africa, where he will equip pastors in Ethiopia with theological and pastoral education. With a pastoral career spanning 38 years and a passion for mission work, Missel’s transition marks a new chapter as he aims to address the global need for pastor training and leave a lasting impact on the global church community.
Keith Missel, former Lead Pastor of Westwind Church in Waukee/West Des Moines, has resigned from his position to embark on mission work with Training Leaders International (TLI) in Africa. With a pastoral career spanning 38 years, including roles as a youth pastor, associate pastor, and senior pastor, Missel and his wife Ellen have a strong background in mission work, having served in Mali, West Africa for a decade and creating mission partnerships in India, Romania, and the Dominican Republic.
Addressing the Global Need: Equipping Pastors in Ethiopia with TLI’s Bible Training Program
TLI aims to address the significant global need for formal pastoral training, as approximately 85% of pastors worldwide lack such education. Keith and Ellen will be serving in Ethiopia, where they will equip pastors in their ministry context. The Missels’ mission is to provide Bible training to pastors who otherwise would not have access to such resources, ensuring they receive education in their heart language.
Ethiopia’s diverse religious makeup poses a unique challenge, with approximately one-third of the population being Islamic, one-third Orthodox, and 17% evangelical. Keith acknowledges a less literate environment in which they will be working. The TLI program involves a three-year process consisting of nine courses. Each cohort consists of 40 to 60 pastors, with a primary focus on Hermeneutics (Bible interpretation) and Homiletics (preaching). Keith’s aim is to help pastors correctly handle the word of truth, drawing inspiration from verses such as 2 Timothy 2:15 and 4:1-5, which emphasize being prepared in all seasons.
Holistic Support and Empowerment: Strengthening Pastors and Communities in Ethiopia
In addition to their main roles, Ellen will also be involved in equipping women in Ethiopian churches, while both Keith and Ellen will provide member care to other TLI personnel on the field, addressing various equipping and counseling needs. Their multifaceted approach aims to support the holistic growth and development of pastors, congregations, and the local church community.
Keith Missel’s extensive pastoral experience and passion for equipping pastors will undoubtedly contribute to their work in Ethiopia. As he transitions from Westwind Church to join TLI, his dedication to providing vital training and resources to pastors aligns with TLI’s mission. Their collective efforts will leave a lasting impact on the global church community.
Embracing Change and Building a Strong Future at Westwind Church
The church is deeply grateful for the contributions of Pastor Keith, whose dedication paved the way for Westwind Church to find its permanent home in Waukee. As Pastor Keith embarks on his new missionary endeavor, the congregation warmly welcomes Pastor Josh Tillman, eagerly anticipating the positive direction and growth that will unfold under his guidance.
This new chapter marks a significant change for Keith and the Westwind Church community. Throughout his tenure, he focused on renewing the church’s vision for the Kingdom and establishing a lasting presence in Waukee. The successful implementation of a collaborative vision, fostering a spirit of generosity, and supporting the Elders in implementing a God-honoring succession plan and were among his notable accomplishments. Keith’s departure serves as an opportunity for the Westwind community to look ahead and embrace their new pastor, but also sustaining core values like God-focused, relentless prayer, authentic community, building families, generous participation, and a missional lifestyle. Ecclesiastes 3:14 summarizes Keith and Ellen’s tenure at Westwind Church: “God works so we will stand in awe of Him.”
